Hajj Ritual

Appropriate conduct when entering the Holy City of Mecca and the Holy Mosque

It is recommended that anyone wishing to enter the Holy City of Mecca perform the full ablution before their entry and enter it in peace and solemnity. For those who have taken the route of Medina, it is recommended that they enter the city via the elevation and depart from it via its lower side. If one is entering via the gate of Bani Shaiba, albeit little known because of the expansion of the Mosque, one should keep in mind that some scholars say this is as good as entering through the gate of Bab-es-Salaam, yet it is preferable to enter through the gate of Bab-es-Salaam and proceed straight until one faces the pillars. It is recommended that one stop at the gate of the Mosque and to say:

(May peace be upon you, O Prophet and so may the mercy of Allah and His blessings. In the name of Allah and by Allah and from Allah and as Allah wills. And peace be upon the Prophets of Allah and His Messengers. And peace be upon the Messenger of Allah. And peace be upon Ibrahim, the friend of Allah and all praise and thanks to Allah, the Lord of the worlds).

Then, on entering the Mosque, one should concentrate on the Holy Ka´aba and, raising the hands towards the sky, say:

(O Allah! I beseech You in this place that I am in and during my first performance of the acts of worship to accept my repentance, to leave behind my faults and to relieve me of my burden. All praise and thanks to Allah Who took me to His sanctified House. O Allah! I bear witness that this is Your sanctified House which You have made a place of resort for people and a blessed state of safety and a guide for the worlds. O Allah! I am Your Servant and the territory is Your territory and the house is Your house. I have come here to seek Your mercy and to pledge my obedience to You, devotedly following Your command and content with Your arrangement of my destiny. I am asking You as a needy person, fearful of Your punishment. O Allah! Open for me the gates of Your mercy and let me obey and please You.)

According to another report, it is recommended that one say the following at the gate of the Mosque:

(I commence in the Name of Allah and by Allah and from Allah and towards Allah and as Allah wills and for Allah and in commitment to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s blessings be upon him and his family. And the most praiseworthy names belong to Allah, and all praise is due to Allah alone, and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s blessings be upon him and his family. Peace be upon Muhammad, the son of Abdullah. Peace be upon you,

O Prophet, and may the mercy and blessings of Allah be with you. Peace be upon the Prophets of Allah and upon His Messengers. Peace be upon Ibrahim, the friend of the Most Gracious. Peace be upon the Messengers and all praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. Peace be upon us and upon the virtuous Servants of Allah. O Allah! Send Your blessings on Muhammad and his progeny, bestow Your benediction on Muhammad and have mercy on Muhammad and his progeny as You have blessed, have sent benediction and have had mercy on Ibrahim. Surely, You are the All-Praiseworthy, the Ever-Glorious.

O Allah! Send Your blessings on Muhammad and his progeny, Your Servant and Your Messenger, and on Ibrahim, Your friend, and on Your Prophets and Messengers and bestow peace on them. Peace be upon the Messengers. And all praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. O Allah! Open the gates of Your mercy for me. And let me obey and please You. And protect me with the protection of faith, always and to my last, exalted is Your praise. All praise is due to Allah who made me one of His delegation and visitors and who made me attendant in His mosques and who made me one of His supplicants. O Allah! I am Your Servant and Your visitor to Your House and there are rights which every host grants to their guests and You are the best of the givers and the most generous host. I beseech You, O Allah! O Beneficent! For You are Allah, there is no God but You, You are the only One, You have no participant, for You are One, everlasting, You do not beget, nor are You begotten, nor is there any equivalent to You. Verily, Muhammad is Your Servant and Your Messenger, may Your blessings be upon him and upon the inhabitants of his house. O Bounteous, O Generous, O Glorified, O Almighty,

O Generous, I beseech You that of the gifts You grant me for visiting You the first be the protection from the hellfire).

Then say three times:

(O Allah! Free my neck from hellfire).

Then say:

(And increase for me Your lawful and good sustenance and keep away from me the evil of the devils among humans and the ǧinn and the evilness of the vicious among the Arabs and the non-Arabs).

Then it is recommended that one face the Black Stone and say:

(I bear witness that there is no God but Allah, He is One, no associate has He and I bear witness that Muhammad is His Servant and His Messenger. I believe in Allah and refuse to believe in false deities and in Laat and Uzza and in the worship of devils and in the worship of all those calling upon someone other than Allah).

Then the pilgrim should move to the Black Stone, hold it, and say:

(All praise is due to Allah who showed us this right path, for we would not have been guided if Allah had not guided us. Glorified be Allah, and all praise is due to Allah, and there is no God but Allah and Allah is the Greatest, greater than His own creation, greater than the one whom I fear and of whom I am wary And there is no God but Allah, He is One, no associate has He, His is the dominion, all praise is due to Him. He grants life and ends it. He ends life and grants it. In His hand is the good. And He has power over all things.

One should then pray for the blessing of the Holy Prophet and his progeny and for all the Prophets as was done on entering the Holy Mosque. Then say:

(I believe in Your word and have faith in Your promise.)

It has been authentically reported by Abi Abdillah (as) that, when the pilgrim comes close to the Black Stone, they should raise their hands, praise Allah, pray for the blessing of the Holy Prophet and ask Allah to accept their acts of worship. Then they should hold the Black Stone with both hands and kiss it. If kissing it is not possible, they might just hold it. If this is not possible, they might touch it with their hand, and if even this is not possible, they might point at it and say:

(O Allah! I have fulfilled my commitment and I have accomplished my obligation so that You can witness my achievement of it. O Allah! I confirm the truth of Your Book and of the practices of Your Prophet (saas). I bear witness that there is no God but Allah, He is One, no associate has He, and that Muhammad is His Servant and Messenger. I have faith in Allah and I refuse to believe in idols and false gods, Laat and Uzza and in the worship of devils and in the worship of all those calling upon someone other than Allah, the Almighty.)

If it is not possible to recite the whole of the above supplication, only part of it may be said and then followed by this supplication:

(O Allah! I have stretched out my hands towards You and I increased my yearning for what comes from You. So accept my glorification and pardon me and have mercy upon me. O Allah! I seek refuge with You from disbelief and poverty and lamentable conditions in this world and in the hereafter.)
