Hajj Ritual

Appropriate conduct during the Sa´ī

It is recommended that one depart for Safa by using the door facing the Black Stone and in a state of peace and serenity.

On reaching this door, the pilgrim should look at the Holy

Ka´aba and concentrate on the corner with the Black Stone, praise Allah, narrate His bounties, chant "Allāhu Akbar",

"Al-Hamdulillāh" and "La ilāha illallāh" (seven times each) and then say thrice:

(There is no God but Allah, He is One, no associate has He. His is the dominion and all praise is due to Him. He grants life and ends it. And He is alive and never dies. And He has power over all things.

Then ask Allah to send blessings upon Muhammad and his progeny (as) and say thrice:

(Allah is the Greatest. All Praise is due to Allah for that to which He has guided us. And all praise is due to Allah for the gifts with which He has entrusted us. All praise is due to Allah, the Ever-Living, the Self-Subsisting, and all praise is due to Allah, the Ever-Living, the Eternal).

Then say thrice:

(I bear witness that there is no God but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His Servant and His Messenger. We do not worship anyone but Him, being sincere in our adherence to Him and His religion, although they who associate others with Allah dislike it.)

Then say thrice:

(O Allah! I ask You for forgiveness and well-being and certainty in this world and in the hereafter.)

Then say thrice:

(O Allah! Grant us good in this world and good in the hereafter and keep us safe from the torment of the fire).

Then say "Allāhu Akbar", "Lā ilāha illallāh", "Al-Hamdulillāh" and "Subhānallāh" a hundred times each, followed by:

(There is no God but Allah, He alone is only One. He has accomplished His promise and He has helped His Servant and He alone overpowered the confederates. And to Him belongs all dominion and His is all praise, He alone is only One.

O Allah! Bless me at the moment of death and in the state of what happens after death. O Allah! I seek refuge with You from the darkness of the grave and its forlornness. O Allah! Grant me shelter in the shade of Your Throne on the day when there will be no shade except Your shade).

Then say:

(I deposit my religion, myself and my family with Allah, the Merciful, the Beneficent, who does not let anything that has been deposited with Him be lost. O Allah! Let me be successful in following Your Book and the practices of Your Prophet, cause me to die as one of his religious community and protect me from temptation.)

Then say "Allāhu Akbar" thrice and repeat the above supplication twice. Afterwards, say the words of takbīr and repeat the supplication. If it is not possible to perform all this, the pilgrim may recite only part of it.

It has been reported by Imam Ali (as) that, when climbing the hill of Safa, the pilgrim should face the Holy Ka´aba, raise their hands in supplication and say:

(O Allah! Forgive me all my sins, every sin I may have committed; and if I repeat them, forgive me again, for You are the Ever-Forgiving, the Most-Merciful. O Allah! Deal with me as You consider best, for if You dealt with me as You consider best, You would have mercy on me. And if You punished me, it would not be because You needed to punish me, but I am in need of Your mercy. O You Whose mercy I need, have mercy on me. O Allah! Do not deal with me as I deserve it, for if You did so, You would punish me without being unjust to me. I have reached the point where I wish to stay clear of Your justice but have no fear of injustice from You. O You Who is the absolute Justice and Who never is unjust, have mercy on me.)

It has been reported by Abi Abdillah (as) that, if the pilgrim seeks to increase their wealth, they should prolong their stay in Safa. It is recommended that they perform the sa´ī by walking in peace and with dignity.

When men arrive at the first minaret, they should hasten their pace until they reach the second minaret. There is no such recommendation for women.

Then the pilgrim should continue to walk with peace and in awe till they arrive in Marwa where they should repeat what was done in Safa and then return from Marwa to Safa in the same manner. If the pilgrim is riding, they should accelerate when they are between the two minarets. They should perform the sa´ī in earnestness, crying and supplicating intensely.
