Hajj Ritual

Appropriate conduct during the stay at Arafat

A number of behaviors have been recommended during the stay at Arafat, some of which are:

1. Ritual purity (ṯahārah) during the stay

2. Performing a full ablution at noontime

3. Continuous supplication and remembrance of Allah

4. The stay should take place on the flat land to the left of the mountain.

5. Joining the two prayers of Dhuhr and ´Asr with one adhan and two iqāmas

6. Recitation of supplications, the most excellent of which are the ones attributed to Imam Hussain (as) and to his son Imam Zain-ul-Abideen (as), which will be set out below.

It has been authentically reported by Mu'awiyah bin Ammar that Abi Abdillah (as) stated:

"Hasten to your prayer and come together to immerse yourself in supplications for it is a day of supplications and prayer. Then find yourself a place where you can be at rest and with solemnity praise and glorify the Oneness of Allah. Recite "Allāhu Akbar" a hundred times, "Alhamdulillāh" a hundred times and "Subhānallāh" a hundred times. Then recite the Chapter of Ikhlās a hundred times followed by supplications of your choice. One must make great efforts to immerse oneself in worship, for it is a day for supplications and seeking refuge with Allah from shaitān (satan) who misses no opportunity to divert your attention, especially on that day. One must not attend to others, but instead focus on oneself, saying:

(O Allah! I am Your Servant. So do not make me one of your most disappointing visitors. And have mercy upon me, as I have traveled to You from a deep ravine.)

Then say:

(O Allah! Lord of all ceremonial places. Save me from hellfire, increase my lawful sustenance and protect me from evil, from the vicious amongst the ǧinn and mankind.)

Then say:

(O Allah! I ask You by Your Power and Your Generosity and Your Beneficence and Your Benevolence and Your Favor and Your Bounty, O You Who is the Best of the Listeners, the Greatest of those who see, the Swiftest in taking account and the Most Merciful of those who show mercy to send Your blessings upon Muhammad and his progeny and grant me (then ask for your wishes).)

Then, raising one's head up to the sky, say:

(O Allah! I require something from You which, if You grant it to me, will not affect what has been denied to me but which, if You reject it, will cause me not to benefit from anything else You granted me. I beseech You to rescue me from hellfire.)

Then say:

(O Allah! I am Your Servant and belong to You, my forelock is in Your hand (Translator's Note: You have total mastery over me) and You know the time of my death. I ask You to let me succeed in doing what pleases You and to accept from me the performance of the rituals which You showed to Your friend Ibrahim (as) and which were verified by Your Prophet Muhammad, may Allah grant peace and honor on him and his family.)

Then say:

(O Allah! Include me among those whose actions have pleased You, whose lives You have extended and to whom You have given a good life after death.)

Then say the following supplication taught by the Holy Messenger (saas) to Ali (as) as reported by Muawiyah bin Ammar from Abi Abdillah (as):

(There is no God but Allah, He is One, and He has no associate. Sovereignty belongs to Him; all praise is due to Him. He gives life and death and gives death and life. He is eternally living and does not die. All good is in His hand and He has power over all things. O Allah! All praise is due to You. You are as You say that You are and better than what is said in any other statement. O Allah! For You is my prayer and my faith and my life and my death. And Yours is my heritage and in You is my power and in You is my strength. O Allah! I seek refuge with You from poverty and from the one who whispers into the heart and from the confusion regarding my affairs and from the torment of hellfire and from the torments of the grave. O Allah! I ask You for the good that comes with the winds, and I seek refuge from the evil that is brought by the winds, and I ask You for the good of the day and the good of the night.)

Among the supplications reported by Abdullah bin Maymoon from Abi Adillah (as) is that

during his wuqūf (stay) in Arafat, at the time of sunset before departure, the Holy Messenger (saas) used to say:

(O Allah! I seek refuge with You from poverty and from the confusion regarding my affairs and from the evils that happen at night and in the day. Let my transgressions be overshadowed by Your forgiveness, let my fear be overshadowed by Your security, let my abasement be overshadowed by Your glory and let my perishable self be overshadowed by Your everlasting existence. O the Best of those from whom to ask and the Most Generous who gives, cover me with Your mercy and enfold me in Your well-being and avert from me all the evil of Your creation.)

Abu Basir has reported from Abi Abdillah (as) that the following is to be said when the sun has set on the day of Arafat:

(O Allah! Do not let these be my last devotions in this place and grant me another visit here during the lifespan You have assigned me.. And let this day render me successful, prosperous, and let it be accepted, providing me with forgiveness and mercy, (make it) one of this day's best transformations of any of the guests and pilgrims to Your Holy House. Make me today the most honorable of Your visitors and grant me more goodness, prosperity, mercy, contentment and forgiveness than You have granted any of them. And bless everything to which I return, family and wealth, be it trivial or considerable, and make me be a blessing for them, too).
