Hajj Ritual

Appropriate conduct while performing the sacrifice

The following actions are recommended while offering the sacrifice:

1. The sacrifice should be of the following kind: camel, cow or male sheep.

2. The animal should be in sound health and well-fed.

3. When performing the sacrifice, the pilgrim should say:

وجهت وجهي للذي فطر السماوات والأرض حنيفاً وما أنا من المشركين، إن صلاتي ونسكي ومحياي ومماتي لله رب العالمين، لا شريك له وبذلك أمرت وأنا

من المسلمين، اللهم منك ولك، بسم الله والله اكبر، اللهم تقبل مني

(I have turned my face firmly and truly towards Him Who has created the heavens and the earth, and I am not of those who associate others with Allah. Indeed, my prayer and my sacrifice and my life and my death are for Allah, the Sustainer of the worlds. He has no associate. And with that I have been commanded, and I am of those who have surrendered to You. O Allah! (All this is) from You and for You. In the Name of Allah and Allah is the Greatest. O Allah! Accept this from me.)

4. The animal should be slaughtered by the pilgrims themselves but if they cannot do it, they should hold the knife in their hand and the person slaughtering the animal should hold the hand of the pilgrim. There is also no objection to the pilgrim holding the hand of the person slaughtering the animal.
