This year, Friday, the 20th of Jumada al-Akhirah, corresponding to December 12, 2025, marks the birth anniversary of Lady Fatimah al-Zahra (p), recognized as the Islamic World Day for Women. On this blessed occasion, it is appropriate to highlight what believing women should draw from this luminous remembrance in a way that aligns with the realities of our time and the challenges we face.
Islam has honored the status of women, recognizing them as the foundation and pillar of a noble family—as mothers, daughters, wives, and sisters—and indeed the very soul of life. Allah has granted both men and women what suits the roles for which they were created and has legislated laws that complement these roles, making each a partner to the other in worldly progress and eternal felicity. The Almighty says in the Holy Quran: “Whoever does righteous deeds, whether male or female, while being a believer—We will surely grant them a good life, and We will reward them according to the best of what they used to do.” (Qur’an 16:97), “The believing men and believing women are allies of one another; they enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong…” (Qur’an 9:71), and “Gardens of perpetual residence—they will enter them, along with whoever were righteous among their fathers, spouses, and descendants…” (Qur’an 13:23).
Numerous Islamic teachings clarify the noble role of Muslim women and the immense reward Allah has prepared for their steadfastness, struggle, and adherence to faith and morals. In contrast, advocates of immodesty and moral laxity seek to exploit women, reduce them to objects, strip them of dignity and virtue, and distort the pure image Islam has bestowed upon them—accusing these values of backwardness while promoting a counterfeit notion of freedom detached from virtue and responsibility.
A noble Muslim woman in this age must not be deceived by such hollow temptations. Rather, she should reflect upon the honor and dignity bestowed upon her by Islam, preserved through modesty, chastity, and hijab. She should take Lady Fatimah al-Zahra (p), the daughter of the Chosen Prophet (p), as her ultimate role model. In her blessed life lies the path to worldly happiness and eternal salvation, for her extraordinary character embodies spiritual and moral perfections that adorn every Muslim woman who follows her example. Among the divine virtues with which Lady al-Zahra (p) was endowed:
1. Supreme Nearness to Allah: She attained a rank wherein her pleasure is Allah’s pleasure, as the Prophet (p) said: “Allah is pleased with what pleases Fatimah and angered by what angers her,” signifying absolute sincerity and spiritual purity.
2. Moral Perfection: No moral or behavioral flaw was ever associated with her. According to “…Indeed Allah desires to repel all impurity from you, O People of the Household, and purify you with a thorough purification.” (Quran 33:33), her purity was intrinsic, not merely behavioral.
3. Comprehensiveness of Virtue: She combined knowledge, worship, struggle, asceticism, chastity, motherhood, eloquence, altruism, and steadfastness in principles—qualities rarely united in a single person. It is narrated that the Prophet (p) said, “Fatimah is the lady of women of the world.”
4. Prophetic Continuity: Through her, Allah decreed the continuation of the prophetic lineage, making her the axis of the blessed legacy referenced in “Indeed, We have granted you al-Kawthar.” (Qur’an 108:1)
5. Established Virtues in Authentic Texts: Her excellence is affirmed in the most authoritative Sunni and Shia sources alike.
6. Symbol of Islamic Unity: Speaking about her unites Muslims, for her virtues are preserved in Sunni canonical works—Sahih al-Bukhari, Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Sunan al-Nasa’i, Musnad Ahmad—in addition to Shia references. Many prominent Sunni scholars dedicated independent works to her merits, such as al-Suyuti in Ihya’ al-Mayyit, Ibn Hajar al-Haythami in al-Sawa‘iq al-Muhriqah, and Ibn al-Jawzi in Tadhkirat al-Khawass.
Thus, Fatimah al-Zahra (p) remains the Lady of the Women of the Worlds and the fragrant part of the Messenger of the Lord of the Worlds—an exemplar of the perfect woman who embodied and manifested the Muhammadan light in her lived reality.
For this reason, Imam al-Askari (p) stated: “We are the proofs of Allah over creation, and our grandmother Fatimah is the proof of Allah over us.”
May Allah make us among those who walk her path and are blessed by her intercession on the Day when neither wealth nor children will avail, except those who come to Allah with a pure heart.
O Allah, send Your blessings upon Fatimah, her father, her husband, her two sons, and the secret entrusted within her, to the number encompassed by Your knowledge and recorded in Your book.
