The blessed Nights of Qadr are approaching us in the last ten days of the month of Ramadan. These are nights through which we can draw a roadmap for the future of our lives, both in this world and the hereafter, by practicing the following steps:
1. Psychological and Spiritual Preparation
One of the most important reasons for a person's success in benefiting from the Nights of Qadr is to prepare for them before they arrive. Fruitful worship is not born suddenly; it requires spiritual preparation that readies the heart to receive divine breezes. A sign of this preparation is for the believer to enter these nights with a heart free from grudges and animosity, as a heart filled with disputes is not ready to receive divine mercy. One should realize that this is an opportunity that may not be repeated in one's lifetime.
2. Presence of Heart in Worship
Many people revive the Nights of Qadr, but some may leave them without achieving the required spiritual transformation because worship can sometimes turn into a formal performance lacking the presence of the heart. The ideal observance requires the heart to be present in every act: when reading the Quran, one should feel they are addressing their Lord; when raising hands in supplication (Dua), one should feel they are standing before God Almighty. As the Quran says: "Call upon your Lord in humility and in privately." (Quran 7:55)
3. Sincere Repentance and Renewing the Covenant with God
The Night of Qadr is the night of forgiveness. It is a great opportunity to review one's self and return to God. True repentance stands on three pillars:
Regret for the sin committed.
Determination not to return to it.
Rectifying what can be rectified regarding the rights of others. If these are fulfilled, God has promised to accept repentance: "Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant." (Quran 2: 222)
4. Increasing Supplication and Asking for Needs
The doors of heaven are opened during these nights. The Ahl al-Bayt (P) emphasized increasing supplication, specifically mentioning Dua al-Jawshan al-Kabir and the Dua of lifting the Mus-haf (Quran). A believer should not limit their prayers to worldly matters but should ask for the hereafter—forgiveness, guidance, and steadfastness in faith. It is also recommended to pray for other believers, especially given the current events where lives are being lost and sanctities are being violated.
5. Connection with the Holy Quran
The Night of Qadr is deeply linked to the Quran, as it was revealed during this night. Observance should include not just recitation, but contemplation and reflection (Tadabbur). The Quran is a guide and a methodology for life; contemplating its verses can open new horizons of understanding.
6. Praying for Imam al-Mahdi (may Allah hasten his reappearance)
One of the important acts is praying for the Imam of our Time. Narrations state that during the Night of Qadr, the angels descend with the decrees of the year and present them to the "Guardian of the Command" (Wali al-Amr) of the age. Praying for his "Faraj" (reappearance/relief) is an expression of longing for the establishment of divine justice on Earth.
7. Turning the Night of Qadr into a Turning Point
The true observance of these nights is not measured by the number of hours spent in worship, but by the impact left on one's life after they end. If a person leaves these nights with a new determination for obedience and a stronger will to struggle against the self (Jihad al-Nafs), they have achieved the goal. However, returning to old habits without change is a lost opportunity.
We ask God Almighty to grant us success in enlivening these nights in a way He loves and is pleased with. Our final prayer is: All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the Worlds.
