Hajj Ritual

Appropriate conduct when throwing small stones at the pillars

The following actions are recommended whilst throwing the small stones:

1. The pilgrim should be in a state of ṯahārah (ritual purity) while performing the throwing.

2. When taking the stones in their hand, the pilgrim should say:

اللهم هذه حصياتي فأحصهنّ لي وارفعهنّ في عملي

(O Allah! These are my stones, so count them for me and reckon them among my acts of worship.)

3. When throwing each of the stones, the pilgrim should say:

الله اكبر، اللهم ادحر عني الشيطان، اللهم تصديقاً بكتابك وعلى سنة نبيك، اللهم اجعله حجاً مبروراً وعملاً مقبولاً وسعياً مشكوراً وذنباً مغفوراً

(Allah is the Greatest. O Allah! Keep Satan off of me. O Allah! I believe in Your book and in the tradition of Your Prophet.

O Allah! Make this an accepted pilgrimage and an approved deed and a praiseworthy effort and a forgiven sin.)

4. The pilgrim should throw the stones at the Ğamrat-ul-´Aqabah from a distance of ten to fifteen steps.

5. While throwing the stones at the Ğamrat-ul-´Aqabah, the pilgrim should face the pillar with their back to the Qiblah but when throwing the stones at the first and middle pillar, they should be facing the Qiblah.

6. The pilgrim should place the stone on the rear of the thumb and push it with the nail of the index finger.

7. When back in Mina, the pilgrim should say:

اللهم بك وثقت وعليك توكلت ، فنعم الرب ونعم المولى ونعم النصير

(O Allah! In You I place my confidence and in You I put my trust. How excellent a Lord and Protector and Helper You are.)
